SUMMARY:IT Security Forum: Hands on Security Capture The Flag
DESCRIPTION:IT-Security Professionals Capture the Flag!\n\nThis year\, the RBTC IT-Security Forum CTF is on Tuesday\, March 31st\, after work from 5:30 – 9pm!   \nAre you ready to hack?!?\n\n\n\nWhether you’re a gray-beard IT-Professional\, a read-team Cyber Pentester\, or a green IT-Security n00b — if you love hands on IT-Security\, then this Capture the Flag event is for you! Our Jeopardy -Style  CTF is the #1 professional Cybersecurity in the ROA/NRV area that attracts the hottest regional Sys-Admin/IT/Network-security and Pentester professionals\, and is created and run by the Virginia Cyber Range.\n\nAgenda:\n5:00 – Arrivals\, food\, networking\n5:30 – Official start time\, announcements\, agenda\n5:45 – Sponsor microphone\n6pm – CTF start time\n9pm – CTF end time\n9:15  – awards\, photos\n\nThis year we’re moving the event to the Christiansburg New River Community College (mall) STEM campus. Our CTF features tongue-in-cheek “Hollywood-hacker” style mood lighting\, pumping electronica background music\, food\, drinks and $1\,000 in IT-Professional themed IT-Security prizes. You don’t want to miss this once-a-year regional IT-Pro event! A GREAT place to network with IT-Security professionals in a fun environment.\n\n\n\nOur Jeopardy-style\, 3hr\, hands on hacking CTF itself is loaded with brand-new challenges from classic cybersecurity categories such as Cryptography\, Recon\, Reverse Engineering\, and cool new Web challenges!.. as well as our super fun “IRL” (in-real-life) challenges that includes physical RFID/RF sniffing\, network/portscan challenges and more!\n\n\n \nGear To Bring:\nWe provide the tables and power strips\, but you need to minimally bring your laptop and power supply.  We also have a number of high-point-value “IRL” (in real life) physical challenges.. but if you want to solve these hands-on challenges\, it will benefit you bring/acquire any of the following to really rack up some big-time points.\n\n\nFlipper Zero/RTL-SDR(or equiv) RFID/RF sniffers\,\nWiFi sniffing adapters (sniffing only\, no attacks or brute force/WiFi Pineapple type devices please)\nUSB/UART adapter (for sniffing physical devices (with wires! :))\nUSB Logic Analyzers (moar wires!)\n\n\n\nYou can solve most of these challenges on Windows/Mac based laptops\, but Linux or a pentesting distro like Kali Linux or Parrot OS will come in super handy.\n \n\nOur Favorite Networking Challenge Returns!\nThe infamous Portscan LED Matrix is back!\n\n(will be a different pattern this year)\n\nOur LED Matrix\, port scanning challenge\, is always a high stress crowd pleaser. Jump through some hoops to get ssh’d in to connect and get whitelisted\, then port scan only the blue LEDs (no red) and that pops the main flag and sets off spinning red lights\, getting you some BIG points on the scoreboard!.. To prepare\, you really need to know how to work with ssh keys\, and beef up on your port scans kung-fu (see this live successful scan video here).\n\nTo RSVP\, watch for our event listing on the RBTC site here: https://www.rbtc.tech/calendar/category/rbtc-events/it-security-forum/ \n\nCome join us\, play the CTF\, have fun and learn something new!\n\nP.S. SUMMARY:RBTC's AI Decoded
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to dive headfirst into the world of artificial intelligence at RBTC’s AI Decoded—where innovation meets inspiration. This isn’t your average tech talk—we’re breaking down AI in a way that’s exciting\, approachable\, and packed with practical insights. \nIt’s no secret that AI is imperfect: models hallucinate incorrect facts\, perpetuate historical bias\, and can even make decisions with disastrous real-world consequences. Yet the sheer power of AI for interpreting the world around us demands a way to extract real insight from systems we know will sometimes be wrong. \nAs it turns out\, we’ve solved this problem before. Humans—imperfect\, biased\, and error-prone—have long been embedded in systems that nonetheless produce reliable outcomes. In this talk\, Eric Pauley will explore why AI models make mistakes\, why they won’t be perfect any time soon\, and how the same principles that make human-centered systems safe can help us build secure\, reliable AI-powered systems. \nWhether you’re AI-curious or already in the game\, you’ll be in great company with a community of forward-thinkers who are just as fired up as you are. \nLet’s decode the hype—and the opportunity—together. \n \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Defense Against the Dark Arts
DESCRIPTION:RBTC Defense Against the Dark Arts brings you..Unlocking Secrets: PulseView & Side-Channel Timing Attacks on Keypads \n\nOverview: \n\n\nIn this demo of hardware hacking\, we’ll introduce PulseView – the ‘Wireshark of hardware hacking’ – and demonstrate a technique to unlock a keypad safe. Our method? A Side-Channel Timing Attack\, which relies on the timing discrepancies in the user interface.  Using an affordable logic analyzer (priced under $20)\, we’ll capture microsecond changes in response times tied to incorrect passcodes. By leveraging this side-channel data\, we will carefully decipher the true passcode of the safe.  \n\n\nUnique Approach: \n\n\nTraditional hacking often focuses on software vulnerabilities to exfiltrate sensitive data. In this demonstration\, we will show how the timing of system responses can leak data without any traditional vulnerabilities. This approach emphasizes the power and subtlety of side-channel attacks in extracting valuable information.   \n\n\nTakeaways for Attendees: \n\n\n\nUnderstand how a side-channel timing attack works to reveal sensitive data.\n\n\n\n\nLearn about the key functionality of logic analyzers and the PulseView software\, often called the ‘Wireshark of hardware hacking.’\n\n\n\n\nGain practical knowledge on how to utilize changes in response time to recover the passcode of a keypad safe.\n\n\n\nJoin us for this insightful session to explore the intricacies of hardware hacking and enhance your cybersecurity skill set with real-world applications and techniques. \n \n\nFeatured Speaker: \nAssistant Professor Monta Elkins  \n \n\n\nMonta Elkins is currently “Hacker-in-Chief” for FoxGuard Solutions\, an ICS patch provider. A security researcher and consultant; he was formerly Security Architect for Rackspace and the first ISO for Radford University. He has been a speaker at DEFCON\, Homeland Security’s ICSJWG (Industrial Control Systems Joint Working Group)\, EnergySec’s Security Summit\, VASCAN\, GE Digital Energy’s Annual Software Summit\, Educause Security Professionals Conference\, Toshiba’s Industrial Control Systems Conference\, NERC’s GridSecCon\, ICS CyberSecurity by Security Week\, UTC Telecom and other security conferences. \n\n\n \n \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Beer & Biotech with Dr. Bryan Hsu
DESCRIPTION:Commercial Applications of Reprogramming Gut Bacteria for Improved Health \nThe gut microbiome is a powerhouse of microbial metabolism\, converting our unused dietary materials into usable and biological products. How can we leverage this for therapeutic value? We have developed a strategy to reprogram gut bacteria to produce and release the proteins of our choice. With mouse model data showing we can address key components of intestinal inflammation and obesity\, our technology has the versatility to produce biologics-on-demand directly in the gut. \nDr. Bryan Hsu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech. His current research interests include characterizing the influence of phages in bacterial consortia\, the genetic engineering phages to introduce new functions to microbiomes\, and investigating the physiological significance of gut phages for the mammalian host. Prior to VT\, Bryan was a Rosenbloom Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard Medical School studying the effects of lytic phages on defined commensal bacterial communities in the gut\, and engineering phages to functionally reprogram resident gut bacteria. He earned his PhD in Chemistry at MIT developing polymeric drug delivery formulations and holds bachelor’s degrees in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from the University of California\, Berkeley. \n \nREGISTER NOW
